Describe one successful activity that your team has planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
On January 15th we held a Year of Wellness launch event to introduce the entire college to a monthly plan which would address eight of the nine wellness dimensions through programs, OSU wellness and HR resources, literature, and recommendations for group activities. Included in the plan was the goal of identifying wellness ambassadors in each administrative unit and academic department within the college to help promote each month’s opportunities. The launch event was well attended (100+), and Bern Melnyk was our keynote speaker followed by an overview of the Year of Wellness plan along with interactive activities.

Describe another successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
In October 2019, we hosted a 4-week group coaching program called Balanced Me, focusing on Emotional Well-Being. It was facilitated by Alison Barney, an OSU Certified Personal Health Coach and Exercise Physiologist, and helped participants in identifying values and finding purpose, as well as learning time management techniques to help balance the “must do’s” with the “want to’s" in daily life.

If your team has kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?

A few examples. Year of Wellness Launch Event (over 100); Group Coaching (over 25); Weekly Yoga (over 10); Weekly Wellness Walks (over 10); Group “steps” tracked through Virgin Pulse (over 5 known groups); a Fisher Peloton (over 10 riders and virtual riders).

How does your team communicate wellness events and resources to your colleagues?

We use email, word of mouth, fliers, team meetings and a monthly newsletter

Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has shown support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team.

The Senior Associate Dean for HR and Staff, Brian Mittendorf, was a member of the BWI strategic planning group and attended all meetings. He was supportive in generating a budget for our efforts, as well as directly communicating with the Dean of Fisher College to generate senior leadership support and advocacy for our efforts. He was also an active participant in Yoga and Walking Wednesdays. The Dean of Fisher College, Anil Makhija, attended and spoke during our Year of Wellness Launch event and has also participated in Walking Wednesdays.

Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.
We have been somewhat “slowed” given the COVID-19 pandemic, but plan to reinvest in our unit ambassador initiative moving into the Fall semester. Having wellness ambassadors in each administrative unit and academic department is a strategy we have to specifically address barriers on a personal level.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator team, what would your dream be?

We are striving to develop more “evidence-based” data and results-focused outcomes to how our efforts are improving individual lives and the overall culture at Fisher College.
