December 2022 Spotlight

Rita Westhoff

How long have you been a Buckeye Wellness Innovator?

One year to less than two years

Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?

I support the James Inpatient and Ambulatory Associate Chief Nursing Officers. Our department includes 10 Directors and additional administrative staff.

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Financial
  • Intellectual
  • Social
  • Creative

Describe a successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.

We have monthly challenges that incorporate several dimensions of wellness. This past summer, we celebrated the end of July with a Be Well & Celebrate Summer challenge. We incorporated physical, social and creative dimensions of wellness.

Throughout the week, we celebrated birthdays, National Dog Photography Day and encouraged each other to make someone's day by talking to them in the elevator for National Talk in an Elevator Day and completing a physical activity and biometric screening.

Everyone participated and thoroughly enjoyed bringing in a photo of their dog. They even asked if we could leave the photos up because it made everyone smile. The goal was to create a stress-free moment, so they could continue the day with motivating attitudes.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, what would your dream be?

If I could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, I would create events that are available to meet the staff at their physical work location. I would love to organize activities around their schedules. Specifically, for our department, I would like to schedule a 15-30-minute workout during the middle, beginning or end of the day that takes place in our building.

Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has supported your role as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator.

I am very blessed to work with leaders who support my BWI role. They afford me the creativity to organize events as I see fit. They lead by example by enculturing a positive work environment.

Please share how you have overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.

These activities have brought us closer together and have helped us support one another. We know we are there for each other and that is important.
