March 2019 Spotlight

How long has your team been working as a collaborative Buckeye Wellness Innovator group?
two to four years

Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?
Ohio State's College of Engineering and Knowlton School of Architecture is one of the largest colleges on campus. We have over 360+ engineering and architecture faculty members & 650 staff, researchers and post docs.

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Social

Describe one successful activity that your team has planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
Last August we had an event called "Healthy Engineering Field Day" which offered a healthy lunch (for purchase) from Kinetic Food Truck. We had healthy snack bars, a resistant band demonstration, the Employee Assistance Program onsite passing out materials about their services and games (corn hole & Jenga). We tried to provide activities that touched on social, physical and emotional wellness.

Describe another successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
With the help of the University, we have held several Biometric Screenings and Chair Massages. Some departments have had monthly potlucks, we also had the OSU Fitness Facility do a presentation on RPAC & The Faculty and Staff Fitness program available at OSU.

If your team has kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?
40 for the smaller events 80 for the Healthy Engineering Field Day

How does your team communicate wellness events and resources to your colleagues?
We primarily use email to disseminate communication to our department

Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has shown support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team.

Our dean advertises our events during his executive committee meetings. Our HR reps help us promote our events by spreading the word to various departments. Overall everyone is very supportive within the College of Engineering.

What has your lead administrator/dean/vice president/department chair specifically done to show support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team?
They encourage department chairs to allow employees to attend our events, they share wellness activities during leadership meetings. The dean makes every attempt to attend our events.

Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.
The biggest barrier is communication and encouragement to participate. I feel as though the more events you have the more your faculty and staff are engaged.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator team, what would your dream be?

Wellness is different for everyone, and everyone has their own dream. Ideally as a team we would like to help as many people as possible. In order to do that we need to have more consistent events and advertise more often. We will try to have an event touching on all the dimensions: career, financial, physical, social, environmental, emotional, spiritual or intellectual.
