Approximately how many people are in your department or unit?

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness have you addressed?

  • Physical
  • Social

Describe one successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
In the spring of 2018, I hosted an "H2O Happy Hour" that featured tastings of different infused waters. This event educated and encouraged participants on how to swap their sugar-sweetened beverages for a healthy alternative. Five recipes were available for tasting, in addition to a 'build-your-own' infused water station. This event attracted 47 participants, encouraged healthy hydration habits and allowed for a little bit of social time on the unit!

Describe another successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
We recently implemented a 'Blood Pressure Club' on our unit. This is a once-a-week event where CRC staff members gather to check their blood pressure. Each member is given an optional tracking log. We focus our attention on the importance of knowing your numbers, longitudinal tracking, tips for staying heart healthy and ways to reduce blood pressure if it's high.

If you have kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?
We have anywhere from 2-47 participants in each wellness event. Our average would be around five people.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, what would your dream be?
My dream is to instill enthusiasm and motivation for healthy choices into each person that attends my wellness events!

What has your direct manager or supervisor specifically done to show support for your role as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator?
When I approached my manager about being a Wellness Innovator, she was very supportive. She attended the training session with me, has provided me free-reign to decorate bulletin boards around the unit, make special wellness announcements in our weekly huddles and attends training events such as Health Athlete. The most supportive thing she does is attend the events that I plan. I couldn't ask for a more supportive manager!

Please share how you have overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues?
One way I have overcome barriers in engaging our unit with wellness events is by asking staff members what types of events they would like to see on our unit. Getting input from the staff creates a sense of camaraderie (and sometimes healthy competition) that works to promote participation.
