How long has your team been working as a collaborative Buckeye Wellness Innovator group?
More than two years
Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?
There are eight people in my immediate department. I reach out and assist several other departments, including Urology, General Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology.
Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?
- Physical
- Creative
Describe one successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
I created a mini chart so people can see how to easily add in more activity to the day. For example:
- Short Lap Around Parking Lot = 760 steps (with stairs)
- Round Trip to the Bathroom = 300 steps
- Refilling Water Bottle at the Bistro = 380 steps (including stairs)
- Round Trip to Car = 450 steps
Describe another successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness
I do try to organize a "Take a Lap" activity at the start of the fall "Hit the Road" challenge to create excitement for the biggest challenge.
If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, what would your dream be?
If I could do one thing as a BWI, I would waive a magic wand and wash away any emotional ties people have to weight and eating. Next, I'd lead people to tools that show how making a few, easy changes can help them feel so much better every day. Then I would follow up by encouraging people that they don't have to change everything all at one time. Even small steps are worth it. Finally, I would have accomplished people believing good health is within reach.
Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has shown support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team.
My manager, has supported my efforts by showing leadership through participating in programs herself. She also allows me the time to coordinate activities during the work day as long as I make the time up. Finally, she encourages others to give things a try.
What has your lead administrator/dean/vice president/department chair specifically done to show support for your role as a Buckeye wellness Innovator?
Our administrator shows support by participating in challenges and backing the YP4H program in what he says to other people about it. He has approved projects I've submitted.
Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.
I continue to be excited about the program. That's the first thing. I feel everything you need is available and easy to access. This shows through to others. I try to reach people personally by talking up the program one on one. Sometimes it takes several tries over time and suddenly someone says, "I'd like to try the challenge this time." I've made myself available to be in the right place at the right time when they are ready to take a chance and try. Also, I use peer pressure to my advantage. If I can get one person interested and I know they have a group of work friends, then I can several, usually.
