October 2018 Spotlight

How long has your team been working as a collaborative Buckeye Wellness Innovator group?
Over four years.

Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?
There are approximately 400 staff members in our building.

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Creative

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator team, what would your dream be?
To have a full-time wellness person who could dedicate more time to the mission. Even with a team as large as ours, often times we run out of time to really do everything we want to do!

Describe one successful activity that your team has planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
Our most successful events revolve around food! We have done everything from providing infused water, to yogurt, oatmeal and trail mix bars to most recently holding actual cooking demos! These events address healthy eating as well as the social and creative dimensions.

Describe another successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
One of our most successful endeavors has been our “Health Hub.” The “Health Hub” is our buildings designated wellness space. The space contains adult coloring pages, a book swap, some small exercise equipment (yoga mat, weights etc.), a blood pressure cuff and scale and a treadmill workstation. The room is decorated to inspire relaxation and mindfulness.

If your team has kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?
It varies greatly. Events can range from 5-100 participants.

How does your team communicate wellness events and resources to your colleagues?
We communicate through email, word of mouth, posting fliers in various locations and faculty/staff meetings.

What has your lead administrator/dean/vice president/department chair specifically done to show support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team?
Our senior leadership has been very supportive. From joining us on our “Walk With a Leader” events to not hesitating to purchase a new treadmill work station when ours was on the fritz!

Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.
Our greatest challenge is participation. We have surveyed our staff, and while this information is helpful and a great starting point, we have found that staff really intend to participate more but they often can’t make it happen. So we have worked hard to cater to those demands and to keep our events to those that work best and seem to reach the most staff.
