May 2020 Spotlight

How long has your team been working as a collaborative Buckeye Wellness Innovator group?
One year to less than two years

Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?
We have 580 on our staff

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Financial
  • Environmental
  • Social

Describe one successful activity that your team has planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
We did a '12 Days of Wellness' activity that went from December 2-17, 2019. Our Buckeyes LIFT team created a "calendar" that listed 10 different wellness tasks under five dimensions of wellness (Emotional, Environmental, Financial, Physical and Social) for a total of 50 options to choose from over the 12 working days. Participants wrote in the activity number that they completed and turned in the calendar at the end of the activity period. 75 out of about 580 people completed the calendar and turned them in for a chance to win some type of prize. There was great participation and was definitely a topic of conversation among our staff!

Describe another successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
A couple of things that we have started since the COVID-19 stay-at-home order are Wellness Wednesday emails and " A Day in the Life: Buckeye Style" daily video.

Our committee comes up with 3-4 relevant topics - COVID or non-COVID related - to highlight each week along with sections for 'Upcoming Events' and 'Resources'. Through this e-newsletter we are able to touch on many dimensions of wellness and provide healthy resources and tools for our employees.

The daily video is just for fun and hopefully brings some happiness to staff to see familiar faces and what people are up to during this time. The videos, which average 2-3 minutes, are sent out each morning to give people something to look forward to as they start their day.

If your team has kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?

Our numbers are all over the board depending on the activity (some were around 5 and a couple were over 200) but I would say we average 50 or less.

How does your team communicate wellness events and resources to your colleagues?

We try to tap into each form of communication (email, fliers, word of mouth, etc.)

Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has shown support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team.

Many managers and supervisors have shown support for our program by allowing employees to participate in events or programming during their work shift. And also by allowing us to use our facilities for internal programming and events.

What has your lead administrator/dean/vice president/department chair specifically done to show support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team?

Gene Smith has been a huge supporter of the Buckeyes LIFT committee from the start! Staff health and wellness are part of our strategic plan and he verbally reinforces the importance at staff meetings and through email, as well as working out in our facilities so people see him walk the walk.

Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.
A big barrier for us is that our employees are spread out in over a dozen buildings and many of us don't know people outside of our units. By forming Buckeyes LIFT we created a team that has 20 Buckeye Wellness Innovators and additional members that are supportive by helping with communication and administrative functions. Each BWI is assigned to one or more units based on location and is responsible for communicating health and wellness opportunities and being their point of contact for any related questions.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator team, what would your dream be?

Engage every member of our staff in some way by providing opportunities under each dimension of wellness.
