March 2020 Spotlight

How long has your team been working as a collaborative Buckeye Wellness Innovator group?
Less than one year

Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?
We have approximately 40 people work at PARE.

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Career
  • Creative

Describe one successful activity that your team has planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
We coordinated a new year resolution rollout which included a space for healthy eating in our office, a visit from Health Plan regarding healthy eating on the go, and an in-house biometric screening opportunity. We followed through on those activities by making announcements to the department beforehand and posting additional information on the fridge and in a team email. Andrew and Marie aim to share health updates to the group and usually pick a theme - like Pelotonia, Health Hearts Month, or mindfulness.

Describe another successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
Another successful activity was featured in a recent AP profile when we won the Buckeye Wellness Innovator grant. You can read more about the grant here.

If your team has kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?
Tracking usage for the equipment has been character building. Our space is open layout and so we have tried to situate healthy activities in quiet places so people can focus which means:

  1. Sign out of equipment is never completed
  2. The nature of the activity makes logging minutes a nuisance.

That said, our FITS team puts out puzzle tables for metal wellness and those are used every day.

How does your team communicate wellness events and resources to your colleagues?

We use email, staff meeting announcements, fliers, and word of mouth to communicate wellness events and resources. We try to do several emails a year and we change out the notices on the fridge monthly.

Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has shown support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team.

Our managers listen to our updates, encourage us to share information with the team and often participate in the activities directly - either by trying out the fitness furniture, attending one of the classes or webinars with us, or allowing us to use certain spaces in the office for wellness time.

What has your lead administrator/dean/vice president/department chair specifically done to show support for your Buckeye Wellness Innovator team?

Keith Myers has proposed fun ideas for keeping wellness interesting and he has participated in our initiatives by publicly encouraging staff and letting us take the time to do the activities - such as the annual walk for wellness or the buckeye wellness events at Ohio Union or RPAC.

Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.
One of our main barriers is that we all have office jobs that require meetings and business to business casual attire. One way we overcome this is by offering equipment that is business friendly (and can be done regardless of what youre wearing.). Another way we overcome this issue is by encouraging use of the wellness apps (especially PULLL and Virgin Pulse) that can be used outside of work time too.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator team, what would your dream be?

Our dream is that our colleagues feel encouraged and empowered to make good health choices; especially for themselves and their families. The ultimate hope would be  as a result of healthy choices, colleagues have longer, more fulfilling lives and have more satisfaction at work and at home.
