June 2018 Spotlight

Years as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator
Over four years.

Approximately how many people are in your department or unit?
I serve as the wellness coordinator/communicator for the hospital. We have a group of other Buckeye Wellness Innovators and other staff who support wellness activities. There are approximately 1,200 University Hospital East staff members. We also have Ohio State Physicians offices and staff members from other business units of the Medical Center who work at UH East and CarePoint East who receive the communications and participate in the activities.

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness have you addressed?

  • Physical
  • Intellectual
  • Social
  • Environment
  • Emotional
  • Creative
  • Financial
  • Career
  • Spiritual

Describe one successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
Our biggest wellness event of the year is our annual Wellness Fair where we have tables staffed by health and wellness services and education teams on a variety of topics that covered most if not all of the nine dimensions. Buckeye Wellness provided the blender bike, so that was "physical" related. The chaplain had a table to address "spiritual" and the Employee Assistance table provided support for dimensions of emotional, financial and career. Nutrition services had a fun, creative make your own trail mix table so that fit into a creative category.

Describe another successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.
We have a variety of activities that support wellness: We developed a "resiliency room" - a quiet space where staff can go take a mental health break. Quarterly Medicine in the Arts programs have creative, emotional and intellectual components. The YP4H and EAP programs produce "Wellness Wednesdays" that cover topics ranging from physical fitness to intellectual wellness. Buckeye Wellness provides instructors for yoga, zumba and LaBlast, supporting physical and emotional wellness. Buckeye Wellness has also provided instructors for educational programs and we also have shown their webinars. Our Physical Therapy staff manage a small gym that staff can join to work out and use aerobic equipment. We have had staff initiate class series in yoga, step dancing and Weight Watchers at Work. We sponsor teams in the HeartwalkPelotonia and Dash for Donation. We host a YP4H nurse and aggressively promote getting biometric screenings completed each year. The nurse also works directly with department managers to schedule department specific screenings. At our monthly supervisory council meetings we model wellness by taking stretch breaks in the middle of the meetings and invite participants to stand during the meeting if they choose. Also, we have had wellness and mindfulness activities at our retreats. We developed a YP4H challenge to encourage "one up - one down" stair climbing.

If you have kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?
We had about 350 participants at this year's wellness fair. For the physical activities and education sessions we average about 12 participants per session. With about 140 Heartwalk participants last year, we had the largest team in the entire University and comprised almost 10% of the Ohio State team. We had more than 200 staff participate in the stair climbing challenge. We have had very high percentage levels of staff completing their biometric health screenings. We have regular use of the resiliency room.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, what would your dream be?
I would want as many staff as possible to participate fully in the wellness activities offered in the Virgin Pulse website. There is so much to take advantage of on the site for every aspect of wellness! If we all took advantage of the programs, we would all be much healthier for it!

What has your direct manager or supervisor specifically done to show support for your role as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator?
My supervisor is the executive director of the hospital and she has provided time and encouragement to coordinate, communicate and support wellness initiatives, programming and ideas.
