Describe one successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.

The most successful event I have organized with OSU Bariatrics was the Walktober Event. This was a point based challenge during the month of October that inspired tracking steps each day to promote walking for exercise. In addition to being "exercise" based program, each week was an opportunity for extra credit points that focused on other areas of wellness. For example, week one, staff were asked to do some reflection and complete a Vision Statement. Week two, we focused on nutrition by trying new recipes. Week 3 was an opportunity to color in a puzzle piece (when put together, it created a work of art). And week four, staff could receive extra credit by bringing in items to donate for the food and coat drive. I also had a private facebook group organized during the month of October for people to connect socially and motivate each other.

Describe another successful activity that you’ve planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.

Another activity I organized was focused on gratitude during the month of November. On a large poster board, I drew "Barry the Bariatric Turkey;" but without his feathers. In order for his feathers to be returned, staff were asked to write down things they were grateful for on a feather and glue it back to Barry. By Thanksgiving, he had all his feathers back!

If you have kept track of participation rates for your activities, what is your approximate average attendance?

Walktober was a great hit! We had 20 of our staff participate! Barry the Bariatric Turkey at 16 participants.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, what would your dream be?

I absolutely love networking, connecting with others, and public speaking. I would enjoy being able to continue to motivate others through presentations similar to what I did earlier this month with the National Academy of Medicine or in larger group settings. I am an advocate for staff and clinician health and wellness and would enjoy my continued involvement in this arena.

Please share how you have overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues?

I have overcome barriers to wellness activities through multiple efforts. I continually stay engaged with staff members and promote/maintain positive work relationships. Using survey monkey has been useful in assessing level of interest and preferences for wellness activities. I try to connect with staff using multiple approaches (for example, I helped Walktober participants who did not have Facebook stay involved by sending them e-mail updates and motivational tips).
