December 2021 Spotlight

How long have you been a Buckeye Wellness Innovator?

Six months to less than one year

Approximately how many people are in your department, unit, building, or college?

650 on the Wooster Campus. We have four Buckeye Wellness Innovators working together on the newly formed Wellness Committee.

Regarding your department or unit's wellness efforts, which of the nine dimensions of wellness has your team addressed?

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Social

Describe one successful activity that your team planned around the nine dimensions of wellness.

The Great Apple Crunch: In order to provide an activity on campus that was healthy and social, we participated in the Great Apple Crunch. This is a project that involves several Mid-Western States, but our campus had not previously participated. We used apples that were picked from trees on the OSU Wooster Campus. We delivered them to the various departments on campus with promotional signs and materials. Faculty and staff were to participate on October 14 at 1 p.m. We took a picture, and it was posted on the Facebook page of CFAES.

Wooster Campus Wellness Committee: I led the formation of a Wellness Committee for the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Wooster Campus. It has representatives from all areas of the campus as well as Ohio State University Extension. Three others on the committee have become Buckeye Wellness Innovators. We plan to work as a team to develop activities for wellness on the Wooster Campus.

We brought back Pilates at noon on Wednesdays for those who are interested. A weekly bike ride was planned by another Buckeye Wellness Innovator on the committee, Martin Lubell.

If you could accomplish anything as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator, what would your dream be?

I would like to see all faculty and staff participate and be successful completing the Virgin Pulse program each quarter. That in itself would assist in keeping people in better physical, mental, and emotional health. The program offers incentives of its own if one participates. I encourage faculty and staff to participate whenever I get an opportunity.

Describe how a manager or supervisor in your unit/department/building/college has shown support for your role as a Buckeye Wellness Innovator.

My supervisor is Dr. Anne Dorrance. She is the Associate Director and Dean of the Wooster Campus. She is deeply concerned about the health and wellness of all the faculty, staff, undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-docs. She encourages me to do anything I can do to help in this area.

What has your lead administrator/dean/vice president/department chair specifically done to show support for your role as a Buckeye wellness Innovator?

She forwarded the information to me about The Great Apple Crunch with the message. “Do you think we can do this?”

Please share how your team has overcome barriers to engaging your colleagues and/or students in your wellness efforts.

We try to plan activities when it is convenient for the most people to participate.
